The unveiling of the No. 2 Construction Battalion commemorative monument at Veterans Park was a meaningful and historic occasion, bringing together about 90 descendants, veterans, community members, families, friends, and supporters.
The ceremony honoured the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the members of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, Canada’s first and only all-Black battalion during the First World War. Despite discrimination and significant barriers, these brave men served their country with determination and distinction.
Together, we gave these men the remembrance and recognition they earned and reflected on the importance of preserving their story for future generations. The gathering was also a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the enduring role of descendants and loved ones in keeping this legacy alive.
Our deep thanks go to artist Kai Exos, Councillor Rawlson King, the veterans and descendants, members of Jaku Konbit and the Defence Team Black Employees Network, and everyone whose presence made the day so meaningful.
The new monument at Veterans Park will stand as a lasting symbol of service, resilience, dignity, and unity, ensuring that the sacrifices and achievements of the No. 2 Construction Battalion are remembered and honoured for generations to come.
